Dust & Cleaning Tips
Things to think about when you Clean varnished wood floors:
Protecting your wood floors is simple. By routinely cleaning, you remove dust and dirt before they scratch and dull the finish or wear the floor.
Always keep water to a minimum when cleaning your wood floors. If you spill (food or drinks), wipe up immediately to prevent any permanent damage or staining.
Sweep using the dust sweeper or vacuum your wood floors as often as needed. Use a mild, specially formulated Wood Floor Cleaner for best results.
Do not use ‘all-purpose’ cleaners on your wood floors as they tend to leave a dull residue and you end up using too much water, which is damaging to your wood floors.
Dorset Wood Floors recommend regular sweeping using the dust sweeper and if an area has had something spilt or dirty use a Spray Mop locally to that area. Depending on how much use the floor has had the floor should only need to be lightly mopped once or twice a month using the PH neutral wood floor cleaner.
To clean your floor, we would recommend using a microfibre mop and PH neutral cleaning spray. This will be gentle but effective on your wooden floor. Try to clean in the direction of the grain.
Avoid detergents and the use of steam, as this can break down the lacquer over time and take note of the other tips described above.
• When mopping your floor, use the minimum amount of water. Use a mop you can ring out well so you’re not applying an excessive amount of water over the timber.
• Avoid household cleaners and detergents and bleach based products as they can be abrasive, causing damage to the wooden floor.
“Top tip - if you’re mopping the hardwood floor, go for the two bucket approach. One to clean the mop and one to re-stock it with fresh water. That way, you won’t end up rubbing dirt and grit across the floor, which could scratch it and leave a dull residue.”
